Emily Bumgardner: Guest photographer 2024
Emily Bumgardner is a graphic design and photography student from Troy, AL, who has recently developed an interest in exploring abandoned locations and her newfound faith. Her approach stems from a sociological perspective, allowing her to uncover the buildings’ past purposes and lives. Bumgardner aims to capture derelict structures to reflect the potential mindsets of the homeless, as well as those who are existentially and spiritually homeless.

Serie presented: A Second Chance
“A Second Chance” is a collection of images created for my senior thesis project that explores homelessness and the profound impact of community support. My research centered on therapeutic communities that offer homeless individuals a nurturing environment, allowing them to rest without judgment or punishment in exchange for light chores.
These communities provide a safe space where residents can feel valued and worthy of a second chance, often leading to personal transformation. As I photographed scenes of abandonment, isolation, and community, I began to connect their journeys to themes of salvation and sanctification. I found that pockets of light and intriguing architectural spaces symbolized the process of change—individuals can only transform when exposed to support and understanding, allowing them to see an alternative to their past experiences.
