Biography:

I found my way to photography through some of the hardest parts of my childhood. Growing up experiencing abuse and sexual assault shaped how I understood the world and my place in it. Photography became a way for me to look closer, explore the world around me, and express things that can be difficult to put into words.

Being raised by my Brazilian immigrant grandmother deeply influenced who I am and how I see the world. Her influence helped shape my understanding of identity, culture, and belonging. As an autistic, queer woman and a mother, I know what it feels like to exist outside of what society considers the norm. Representation is deeply personal to me because I understand what it means to grow up searching for a place where you feel seen and understood.

When you look through my photography portfolio, you may not be able to identify my ethnicity, and that’s something I take pride in. I don’t want my work to represent just one type of person or one way of experiencing the world. I want to photograph people across different backgrounds, identities, and walks of life because that’s what the world actually looks like. For too long, so much of the imagery we’re shown has been shaped through a narrow, predominantly white perspective. I want my work to contribute to something broader, where different people are represented as they are, rather than as they’re expected to be.

For me, photography is about more than making an image. It’s about challenging assumptions, recognizing our shared humanity, and making room for people whose stories have too often been left out of the frame. I want my work to reflect the complexity of the world we live in and help people feel seen, especially those who have spent their lives feeling like they don’t quite fit in.

Author's comments:

Thank you for this opportunity, especially for local south photographers to participate in something like this. I tried my best to export them in the right formats! I’m not sure it if works.

From my eyes to yours

This series is a collection of queer women, artists, performers, and people who exist outside society’s expectations. I’m drawn to people who don’t fight to be themselves; they simply are. I want my photography to reflect a world beyond the narrow perspectives we’re often shown.
