Gus Bennett Guest photographer 2024
Dedicated to exploring powerful narratives, Bennett’s personal projects include Organic Watermarks, which documents the experiences of individuals affected by Hurricane Katrina; Patty Cake, a celebration of Black girlhood; Saints and Sinners, an exploration of Black spiritual identity; and A Room in My Mother’s House, which honors the beauty and sanctity of Black femininity and motherhood. His New Orleans People Project further illustrates the rich tapestry of stories and contributions from the citizens of New Orleans.
Currently, Bennett is also working in Selma, Alabama, where he continues to engage with communities, documenting their stories and fostering connections through his art. As the official photographer for the Essence Music Festival for over 21 years and a 2019 Joan Mitchell Center Artist-in-Residence and Fulbright Scholar, Bennett remains committed to nurturing emerging photographers as an educator and mentor.
Through his extensive body of work, Gus Bennett continues to capture the spirit, resilience, and beauty of the communities he serves, leaving a lasting impact on both art and society.
