Kira Kelly: Guest photographer 2024

Kira Kelly is a Los Angeles-based cinematographer known for her work on films and television series. She has received multiple nominations and is recognized in the industry.

Kira took still photographs before she ever held a motion picture camera, but for some reason, photography felt like a hobby—something to do in her free time. Perhaps because of that, stills became a place without pressure to create—there was a freedom to it. Recently, the desire to share those images has opened up a whole new world of expression for her, and photography has become more vital.

Solitude

“As a cinematographer, I find making photographs to be a wonderfully solitary act. There are no trucks full of equipment or large groups of people – just my camera and me. There’s a lightness to this solitude.  I see glimpses of magic and happy accidents. I want to capture moments where there’s a story about to creep around the corner. Quiet, empty spaces with muted colors become characters. I like to imagine who was just sitting on that yellow sofa or what’s about to come over a backlit hill at night.

This work explores a more solitary version of storytelling for me that brings together family, memories and ever evolving narratives. “
