Stephen Humphreys: Guest photographers 2023

Stephen Humphreys is a graduate of Princeton University and a US attorney with expertise in government corruption investigations. He pioneered innovative uses of racketeering laws and other criminal statutes in the fight for public integrity and accountability. He has served as an independent legal expert in the investigation of Russian election interference in the US, the Fulton County Georgia District Attorney’s criminal prosecution of attempts to overturn the 2020 election, and the anti-corruption legislation of the Ukrainian parliament.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Humphreys has travelled to the embattled country many times, spending more than six months in Ukraine to assist with war crimes investigations, volunteer with Ukrainian military training and intelligence, and teach in Ukrainian universities.

As part of his efforts to educate the public on the issues he considers most important, Stephen has helped produce films, working with US, Ukrainian, and British production crews. One of these films— recently released by Journeyman Pictures as “Under Deadly Skies–tells the story of Russian violations of international law on the eastern front.

Humphreys also writes for various publications in the United States and Britain on legal, political, and intelligence issues in the US and Ukraine. Humphreys traveled all over Ukraine photographing the effects of the war, the devastation of homes and buildings, and the damage to the people of Ukraine, as well as their brave resilience. An exhibition of these photographs debuted at the University of Alabama Gallery in August 2023.

He began his career in the US Senate. As part of his government service, Humphreys traveled extensively in Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Vietnam, and Cuba. He traveled approximately a hundred times each to the latter two countries, where he amassed extensive art collections which are frequently exhibited in museums and galleries. Humphreys himself studied painting from an early age and took up photography as a student at Princeton. He has also frequently exhibited his photographic explorations of Vietnam and Cuba, with images known for their painterly and expressive qualities.

He considers his series of photographs from Ukraine an important part of his efforts to educate the rest of the world about the people of Ukraine and their brave struggle against tyranny.
